Your Final Portfolio!

As I explain on our syllabus:

A portfolio is a text that shows who you are as a writer.  It is your chance to demonstrate what you have learned this semester.  You will be assembling an on-line collection of your work this semester—revised projects, an early draft, weekly writings, and an end of semester reflection—that showcases your growth as a writer and your engagement with the writing process.  This final text will demonstrate that you can make critical choices about assembling and presenting your work, that you can meaningfully reflect on your acts of composing and your written texts, and that you can speak about the strategies and insights you will be taking into the future as you continue your education at St. John’s and your life as a member of the communities you belong to.
In other words, this portfolio is a chance for you to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished this semester.

I generally recommend creating your final portfolio using Digication.  However, if you prefer to use Blackboard or another site (like WIX or Weebly) to collect your work, that’s fine too.

Your portfolio should include:

1.) A thoughtful title and theme that reflect the work you have done this semester.
This means avoid general titles like “My Work” or “English 1000C” or “My Writing.”  Make it unique!  Something that only you could have written.

2.) A thoughtful, reflective portfolio letter that speaks critically and meaningfully about the work you have done this semester
This is key!  This letter is a significant part of your final grade for the course.  It should be a cohesive reflection (with examples from your work) of at least 3-4 pages.  Feel free to incorporate writing from your process letters if you are not including them separately.  The following are some questions you may wish to address:
*How did you choose the pieces you did for the portfolio?  What do they say
about who you are as a writer?  What is the relationship among them?
*How did you revise?  Be specific.  Point to places in your texts where you made changes as you moved from draft to draft.  Here you can also explore thoughts for future changes you make if you were to keep working on the pieces.
*What audiences did you write for?  Think carefully about each piece—what specific moves did you make to address your readers?
*What have you learned about yourself as a writer during this course?
*What are your thoughts on the different genres you worked in?
*What difficulties/successes have you had?
*How did you incorporate feedback from me and your peers?

3.) Three revised writing projects (or two revised projects and another collection of meaningful writing selected from your language statement, in-class writing prompts, process letters, annotated bibliography, etc.  You must include some evidence of research.)

4.) A first draft of one of the three assignments you include

5.) Your best two reading responses
(You can copy and paste these from Blackboard)

6.) The best feedback you gave another writer in the course
(You can copy and paste a peer response from Blackboard or write a short narrative)

7.) Any other writing assignments, exercises, images, personal writing, etc. you wish to
     include

Note: Please carefully review the grading requirements in the syllabus.  The portfolio is one of three grades that will be averaged together to determine your final grade.  The final writing projects that you submit in the portfolio should score an average of 3 to 4 on the rubrics you designed, or you can use your portfolio reflection to explain—substantially and in specific detail—questions/concerns/ideas for future revision in order for you to receive an A on the portfolio.
