Consider the various perspectives regarding Colin Kaepernick, patriotism, and the nature of dissent that we have read and discussed. Choose one question among the several that have arisen and determine how the writers we’ve read address that question. Your question might focus on Kaepernick, or it might focus on the larger questions regarding dissent in general. These choices are not mutually exclusive—if you decide to write about Kaepernick, you will need to take on the larger questions of dissent; if you choose to write more generally about dissent, you can use Kaepernick as a case study. Once you’ve figured out what question will motivate your essay, consider what at least three of the writers have to say about this question. Your aim is to produce an essay that summarizes these perspectives and “synthesizes” them into a conversation. You will NOT offer your own point of view as you compose this conversation. A detailed description of how to successfully compose the Summary & Synthesis essay can be found in Chapter 9 of The Essential Guide.
